Motorway services reluctantly raise the price of bottled water

The new recycling charge for plastic bottles looks like pushing the cost of a small bottle of water through the £10 barrier at the motorway services.

The spokesman for Welcome Break Services, Peter Thape, says that his company have considered everything, but may well have to pass the new levy on to customers.

Thape admits that they had hoped to incorporate the new charge onto a share bag of sweets but felt that £13 for a pouch of Maltesers, or 2 bags for £20 was slightly too much.

‘We could have spread it across the sandwich range, but we were keen to keep the £50 ceiling,’ said Thape.

‘Costs are admittedly higher here at Welcome Break, but it can be difficult to transport our goods around,’ added Thape.
