England have been awarded the 2010 World Cup after a keen-eyed TV viewer, who had been watching the game on catch-up, spotted that Lampard’s shot had crossed the line.

Now that people sat at home can phone in and referee sporting events like The Golf, FIFA were happy to take the call from armchair football fan, Peter Thape.

Thape had been meaning to watch the game for ages, and rang up just before lunch today, when he’d spotted the refereeing error.

‘I wouldn’t have thought about ringing in ‘till I’d seen the golf last night,’ said Thape.

‘I was in two minds though, ‘cause I didn’t want them taking the World Cup of ’66 off us,’ added Thape.
